We provide a variety of sedation and sleep dentistry options for patients who experience anxiety when they visit the dentist. Sedation reduces anxiety by keeping you calm and reducing your response to pain and discomfort. The level of sedation is tailored to your individual needs.
Nitrous oxide is a common dental sedative. Nitrous gives a mild level of sedation that rapidly wears off when your appointment is over.
For a higher degree of anxiety control, we can prescribe an oral sedative or anti-anxiety medication. You take the sedative just prior to your visit with us so the medication has time to take effect. Oral sedatives provide a moderate level of sedation and may leave you drowsy when they wear off.
Sleep dentistry is the highest level of sedation we offer. The sedative is administered intravenously and takes effect very quickly. IV sedation is similar to a light sleep, and some patients will doze off. You will not be aware during your procedure and will have no memory of your treatment when the sedative wears off.
Please note that all sedatives will leave you legally impaired and unable to drive. You will need to arrange transportation home from our office and you should have someone to take care of you for 24 hours following your appointment.
